Nobody Knows Me

"Come on, Jeff!" Amy called, turning around to stare impatiently at the young man, who had a tendency to lag behind.

They were in the airport at Los Angeles, after having just got off their flight from North Carolina. This was where SmackDown was taking place tonight. Stephanie McMahon had called Amy back as promised once she had gotten the definite information she said she'd get. That had been two days earlier.

At first, when the GM had called her back immediately, the redhead had feared that she never would - that the call with the brunette had been too good to be true - but then, true to her word, Stephanie had come through. She'd told Amy that she and Jeff should come to L.A. to meet with her at the very next SmackDown - so here they were.

"I'm goin' as fast as I can," Jeff complained as he lugged his wheeled suitcase behind him. He had to acknowledge the fact that he did tend to overpack - funny, because he wasn't even a woman...

"Well, move a little faster! We don't want to be late, you know...Stephanie's being nice enough to give us this chance...The least we can do is show up on time.

The colorful-haired man quickened his steps to catch up with his best friend. Amy, of course, right. Stephanie had been kind enough to invite them, so it was only fair that they arrive on time.

"How 'bout we call for a rental car?" Jeff asked once they were outside. He reached for his cell phone, which was attached to a little clip on his belt.

"Never mind that," the diva said. "There's no time - let's just catch a taxi." Not to mention that there were plenty of those in the area. They were lined up to pick up passengers, and still more were arriving.

They hurriedly made their way to a cab that had just pulled up, the driver stepping out to chivalrously help Amy with her bag. As the man and Jeff loaded the trunk, the redhead told the driver where they wanted to go.

When they arrived at the arena a few minutes later, Amy and Jeff handed the cabbie some bills.

"Keep the change!" the redhead said, and after unloading their luggage, they rushed into the building.

"Damn..." she muttered. "We're a few minutes late." She glanced at her friend, a feeling of dismay coursing through her. Jeff, of course, was known for being 'fashionably' late - which had gotten him into trouble a couple of times in the past - but Amy was normally one of those people who made it a habit to be on time, or even early. She only hoped Stephanie would understand.

They quickly located the bruntte's office and found her seated at her desk, rummaging through an assortment of papers. Amy cringed as she also noticed Stephanie's checking her watch.

"Knock, knock..." she said sheepishly, rapping lightly on the open door with her knuckles.

The General Manager looked up and saw them standing in the doorway.

"Well, well...You two are finally here..."

The redhead blushed and began to explain as she stepped into the room. "Stephanie, I'm so sorry...I-"

"It was all my fault, Stephanie," Jeff cut in as he stepped past Amy and approached the brunette's desk. "As you know, I have a tendency to be late to shows and meetings and such, and I sincerely apologize."

The GM cocked her head to one side as she regarded the colorful-haired man. Jeff Hardy sounded so sincere, and she knew his apology was genuine. He had to feel awful, not only because this was his chance at getting to stay with the WWE, but also because he'd caused his friend to be late as well.

"All right..." Stephanie said with a nod. "It's all right..." She gestured for them to sit in the twin chairs situated before her desk. When they did, she smiled at them, clapping her hands together as she did so.

"All right...what's important is that the two of you are here. The brunette glanced from Jeff to Amy, then back to the Hardy brother again. "I have big plans in store for you...Well, more aptly, big plans for all of us..."

Jeff cocked a brow as he shifted his gaze from the SmackDown GM to his best friend. The redhead wore an equally puzzled expression on her face, as Stephanie didn't merely seem to be talking about a simple storyline for upcoming SmackDown tapings.

No... There was definitely more than met the eye...
