Rediscovering

When they returned to the backstage area following the wedding segment, Adam felt elated. It was to the point that he couldn't even hide it!

"Holy cow, Ames, that was amazing! Did you hear that crowd reaction? Did you?"

The redhead smiled and nodded at him. She was exceptionally quiet due to her own thoughts overtaking her. In vast contrast to her ex-boyfriend, she had extremely mixed emotions over what had just transpired.

"Yeah... I heard it," she said. She kept the small smile on her face for Adam's benefit, but the truth was, she was now suddenly feeling somewhat sad, even depressed.

The kiss they had shared out there in front of a live audience of thirty- or so thousand, not to mention another some odd million who would be watching at home in the days to come, had indeed been amazing. Yet, at the same time, Amy couldn't help but feel an emptiness inside of her after it. It had triggered some very deep place inside her, emotions she hadn't felt in so long... And it left her with such an incredible sense of nostalgic yearning.

"And because the fans hate Vickie so much," Adam chattered on excitedly, "they absolutely loved you! They went apeshit for the reunion of the Rated R Couple! Man, what a rush that was!" He gazed fondly upon her, wanting nothing more than to just tug her to him and kiss her again - only this time, it would be Adam Copeland kissing Amy Dumas rather than Edge kissing Lita. Oh, how he had missed this woman. He still missed her... He missed her being in his life in the manner that she'd once been in it.

"Amy..."

"Hey, you guys," a new voice cut in, interrupting Adam.

The two looked up to see Alvin standing there, a big smile on his face.

"Great segment! Man, you two should congratulate yourselves for what'll probably be the new highest-rated segment on SmackDown!"

"Thank you, Al," Amy replied. She offered him a small smile, wishing she could just run and escape. She was feeling way too many emotions at the moment, and a few of them were quite negative. What was she doing here? How had she agreed to be moved to SmackDown? More importantly, why had she agreed to return to the WWE in the first place?

"Thanks, man," the Canadian said with a nod. He hated that he was feeling more than a little resentful of his friend's presence right now. After all, Alvin only meant well and was being nice.

All of a sudden, they were joined by yet another person.

"Wow, you guys," Vickie exclaimed as she returned from the arena, "we got a real hit with that segment!" She laughed and clapped her hands with excitement. "I guess this means I get to play the good guy now!"

"With that heat you just got out there?" Alvin remarked with a smirk. "Lady, I don't think so."

The woman playfully swatted at his shoulder.

Adam looked back over at Amy. It had been on the tip of his tongue to say something to her, something very important, but of course they'd had to be interrupted. He wanted to get back to that, and now, of course, it was not to be.

"Would you all excuse me?" Amy asked. She gestured with one hand as she continued. "I've got to go and freshen up, and I need to make a call."

"Sure," Al said.

No one else had much of a chance to respond as the redhead suddenly scooted down the hallway, out of there.

Adam was crestfallen. Once again, he'd lost an opportunity to talk to the woman. He stared after her retreating form as Alvin announced he too had to split, and then it was just him and Vickie.

"Hey," the woman said. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah."

"Oh, God," Vickie said, putting both hands up to her mouth, "I'm so sorry if I interrupted an important moment."

The blond man shook his head, giving the woman's shoulder a small pat.

"It's not your fault," he assured her. "Besides, Al came over first... But he didn't know."

"If you want, I can speak to Amy for you."

"Huh?"

"Adam, come on," Vickie said with a knowing expression on her face. "Everyone knows how you feel about her... Well, everyone but her. I can put in a good word for you, if you'd like." She smiled at him winningly and linked her arm into his.

"You don't have to do that, Vickie." Adam was casting through his mind as to how awkward it would be to have someone else talk to the redhead on his behalf. It would be mortifying. Besides, why would he find it so hard to talk to this woman when he'd already loved her and been in a relationship with her?

"Okay, but you will talk to her - right?" Vickie persisted.

"Yeah, I will."

"Promise me!"

Adam smirked as he looked her in the face. He couldn't help but chuckle at her demeanor.

"Okay!" he relented. "I promise. Happy now?"

"I will be, once you make good on that," the woman replied with a wink.
