Whatever That Hurts

Amy sat in front of the TV monitor in the women's locker room, not really paying all that much attention to the pay-per-view - until...

She looked up sharply as she heard the voices of Chris Benoit and Brock Lesnar.  The two men were gathered around... And then she saw him...

Adam was lying on the floor in the arena hallway, his eyes closed.  He was totally still - unmoving.  Oh, God...

Amy realized he was supposed to have been knocked unconscious, and that this was the way they'd decided to keep Adam out of the match.

She could feel the tears coming as EMTs suddenly came and placed the blond Canadian man on a stretcher.  Gingerly, they fixed a neckbrace into place on his neck, and the redhead could hear people speaking - at this point, aside from Adam, she couldn't even tell who was who anymore - they were saying that Team Angle and their leader were responsible for Edge being hurt.

Suddenly, Stephanie McMahon appeared on the scene, and she practically warded off Benoit and Brock, claiming, "I'll take care of Edge."

The redheaded diva kept her lips tightly pressed together, thinking how she knew the brunette wished she could 'take care' of him.  She'd always bitterly sensed that Stephanie had felt a little more than an attraction toward her boyfriend...

And then it all came rushing back to her, that harsh reality - Adam was no longer her boyfriend - and hadn't been for the last nearly nine months.  She had ended their relationship.

God... How many times after the breakup she'd wanted to approach the blond man... She'd realized shortly after ending it that it had been a mistake - the biggest and worst mistake of her entire life.  Many a time, she'd wished to approach him, beg his forgiveness and for him to take her back - tell him that she'd been wrong in her reckless decision to leave him... That she missed him and still loved him - that she did want to someday marry him and bear his children...

But she hadn't done any of that, no matter how badly she wanted to - regardless of how desperately she wanted to be back with him, and all the things she wanted for their future.

Amy swallowed as she thought about all of this.  As she watched the EMTs load the stretcher and the love of her life into the back of an ambulance, she somehow managed to hold back the tears.

Damn it... The reason she'd never approached Adam and begged him to take her back wasn't something as silly and simple as her pride.  She knew how very badly she'd hurt him when she'd left, and she was terrified that he would refuse to take her back.  And although she knew he wasn't a vindictive type of person, he still held that certain kind of power over her.  Why would he want to take her back after she'd so easily fractured his heart?

"It's such a shame, isn't it?" a soft voice asked, the feminine tones sad.

Amy whirled around, startled, and came face-to-face with Trish Stratus.  The blonde woman eyed the TV screen with sorrow in her chocolate-brown eyes, shaking her head slightly.  "He was really taking off on SmackDown, from what I heard...Rumor has it that if Brock Lesnar didn't get the WWE title from Kurt Angle, Edge was going to get his shot..."

The redhead blinked sadly as she glanced from her friend's face back to the screen.

"I don't know if you know this, since you haven't been around as much since your injury," Trish said, "but a couple of months back, the bigwigs were even considering moving him to RAW to feud with Triple H for the World Title..."

The picture on the monitor blinked out as the camera cut back to the ringside area.  Amy turned back to the petite blonde, biting her lip as she felt nearly overwhelmed.  She thought she might burst like a broken dam at any second, and Trish seemed to sense this.

"It's okay, Amy..." the blonde said softly as she came to sit beside the redhead on the couch.  She put her arms around the other woman, hugging her and gently stroking her hair over her shoulders.  "It'll all be all right..."

The heartbroken diva began to cry softly, the tears streaking her face as she held fast to her dear, compassionate friend.
