In The End

Adam awoke feeling quite groggy, and he squinted at the bright morning sunshine that filtered into the room through the drawn drapes.

He shifted his sleepy gaze over toward the other bed, somehow fully expecting to see Amy laying sound asleep within - but to his surprise, the redhead was nowhere to be seen.

The blond man sat up, swinging his long legs over the side of his bed.  He raked a hand through his long hair as he yawned and thought about the distraught woman.  Amy had been so extremely upset, he found it hard to believe she'd even awoken before him, much less left the room.

He decided to get up, shower, dress and go downstairs to the hotel cafe for some breakfast.  With any luck, he'd run into the redhead there.  He worried about her.

Amy lay on her back on the bed in the hotel room she and Kurt had been sharing but which she hadn't stayed the previous night.

As she stared almost blankly up at the ceiling, she couldn't help but feel sorry for herself.  She was feeling rotten - which was nothing new these days - and she also wondered what might have gone down the previous night when Kurt had been out with Eric and Shane.

He'd mentioned Torrie Wilson in the middle of their fight... That couldn't be good.  In fact, it was anything but.  The Olympian knew how much she despised the woman, and yet he threw her in her face.  And because of that, Amy now found herself suspicious of Kurt possibly having an affair with the blonde.  God damn it...

The sudden ringing of her cell phone on the nightstand startled the redhead, and, reluctantly, she straightened up into a sitting position and reached for the device.

"Hello?"  Amy answered without bothering to check the caller I.D.

"Hi...Amy, it's me," a woman spoke on the other end, and the redhead instantly recognized the voice as belonging to Nora Greenwald - one of her closest friends in the company.

"Hi, Nora..."  She closed her eyes as she guiltily reminded herself how very much she'd been neglecting her friendship with the brunette for the past couple of months - ever since things with Kurt had been going south.  When things had still been good, Amy had made sure to spend plenty of quality time with Nora - the two of them, along with Lisa Moretti, had gone for plenty of 'Girls' Nights Out' back when.  But the moment the problems in her relationship had piled up, she'd been a not-so-good friend.

"Are you okay?" Nora asked, her voice tinged with concern that Amy could clearly discern over the phone wires.  "I spoke to Lisa late last night, and she told me Shane said you and Kurt had another fight..."

"I...yeah...I..."  The redhead found herself stumbling on her speech, and she was very close to tears - again.  Her eyes actually welled full of the moisture at the concern in her friend's voice.  Nora cared - she really cared.  While she wasn't totally outspoken like Lisa, the little brunette always told her that she deserved far better than what Kurt had been giving.  She counseled her on occasion, and Amy had even once laughingly asked her why she hadn't gone into psychology or social work for a living.

"Oh, Amy...It's really bad, isn't it?"

"We...we just had another fight a few..."  The redhead let her words trail off as she became choked with emotion.  "Nora, I don't know how much more of this I can take..."  She ran a hand through her long red hair and held it there, afraid she would break - shatter into a million pieces like her heart felt like it was doing.

"Why don't you come to my room?" the petite brunette suddenly suggested.  "You shouldn't be alone at a time like this..."

"But...What about Chris?"

"He's sound asleep and can sleep through a war," Nora replied, and Amy could almost hear the silly smirk in her voice.  She knew it was the truth, however - Chris Jericho was known for his ability to remain sound asleep in the middle of a car trip with five other wrestlers with heavy music blasting through the speakers.

"Okay..." she replied, reluctant to intrude upon her friend's privacy with her boyfriend, even if he was asleep.

"Amy - don't feel that way..."

The redhead was taken aback.  "Don't feel what way?"

"That you're intruding - because you're not," Nora stated.

The redheaded diva blinked in surprise at the other woman's words.  It was amazing how truly perceptive Nora could be - she'd pretty much read her mind, and through a telephone wire at that.

"I...I can't help it..."

"Don't be silly, Amy," the brunette retorted.  "Now, come on over here before I go to you - and if Kurt is there or comes back if he's not, I'll just have to kick his ass for you..."

Amy couldn't help the very tiny smile that came to her lips at the spunky speech.  One thing was for certain - Nora always knew exactly what to say to pick her up when she was down.

As she slipped from the room and out into the hall, the redhead thought about someone else as well.  She wondered if Adam might have already awakened to find her gone.  The tall blond man had kept her sane the previous night.

She thought she really ought to thank him for that - for being there for her and for just being himself...
