On the Edge of History?

OKLAHOMA CITY – Maybe no WWE Superstar has more at stake at this year’s Royal Rumble than Edge.

Not only is Edge in the 30-man Royal Rumble Match with a chance to headline WrestleMania XXI and finally earn his chance at the World Heavyweight Championship, but there’s also the rather large matter of closing the door on his ferocious rivalry with Shawn Michaels.

"This year, I get the opportunity to win the Royal Rumble and earn a spot for the title at WrestleMania, and do it on the same night that I beat an icon in Shawn Michaels,” Edge said. “How many people can say that? Nobody.”

Indeed, it will be an exhausting and possibly historic night for Edge, who figures to be right at home in the rumble. After all, he’s had basically no allies over the last couple of months.

"Since Taboo Tuesday I’ve taken the mentality that I’m a lone wolf,” Edge said. “I don’t have friends. And that will help me in that environment.”

It was Taboo Tuesday, last October, when the seeds of Edge’s unparalleled rage were planted. A seriously-injured HBK was chosen over Edge by the fans for a chance to face Triple H for the World Heavyweight Championship in Milwaukee that night.

Then, at New Year’s Revolution earlier this month, Edge was knocked out of the six-man Elimination Chamber Match because of Sweet Chin Music delivered by the legendary guest referee.

The Royal Rumble is Edge’s chance to close the book on all of the anger and bitterness HBK has caused. And this time, it’s all on his shoulders. And that’s exactly how he wants it.

There will be no internet voting. There will be no special guest referee with a killer finisher to ruin things.

"The political hierarchy of the WWE, the fans and their decisions, it can’t affect me,” Edge said. “This time, the ball is in my court and I’m going to smash it back in Shawn Michaels’ face.”

Edge will try and make up for lost time at the Royal Rumble. Remember, he missed each of the last two WrestleManias with neck injuries. What better stage could a young Superstar have than the Royal Rumble Match and a singles match with HBK on the same night?

"Winning the Rumble is a new road to go down and one I feel like I belong on,” Edge said. “Since Taboo Tuesday, I’ve felt like I’ve been ready to write a new chapter in my book. I think the story will really take its leap when I beat a guy like HBK and then win the Rumble.

"It doesn’t matter if I draw the first spot, which wouldn’t surprise me the way my luck is going, or the 30th spot,” Edge continued. “It won’t matter. It’s my destiny.”
